Extension Of Ministry Of Labour And Social Affairs Berlin

Competition entry (2013)

The competition for the extension building of the German Ministry Of Labour And Social Affairs at Berlin’s former Wilhelmplatz set a difficult task of dealing with the destroyed spatial situation of Berlin’s lost square Wilhelmplatz and the extension of the Ministry building in a former Nazi building. Our competition entry represented a clear vote for a long-term retrieval of the Wilhelmplatz with mostly aligned building heights and enclosed square elevations. By deliberatley abstaining from the use of the most possible numbers of storeys, the estimated construction costs had been reduced by 15% compared to the budget. A glazed bridge is connecting the extension to the main building, thus preventing communicational cuts between departments.
